PADDLER 22
Words : Guy Baker Photos : Sam Smith
In 1983 , I led an expedition with kayaks tied to mules over a 16,580-foot pass to the Indian Himalayas to descend one of the two major tributaries of the Zanskar River from where the river exited the glacier . The Kurgiak Chu merges colourfully with the Tsarap River at the ancient Phuktal Gompa , dating from the tenth century to form the Zanskar . Unusually for its time and equally so today , all the kayakers were under 18 and from some of the most deprived inner London boroughs .
