COACHES CORNER WITH CHRIS SHAH
What Are Your Rules ?
Here is some advice on rules learned in Iceland and coaching thousands of people . Rules can shut down motivation and turn off the action of people hoping to get into shape . However , many people stick to their workout plans and reap healthy rewards . One of the differences between these people is their rules .
As adventures go , Iceland is spellbinding .
There are waterfalls , black sand beaches , lagoons , and natural scenery out of this world . At the top of the list are the famed Northern Lights , one of the world ’ s natural wonders . Guess what ? On my trip , I didn ' t get to see the Northern Lights .
I ’ ve always prided myself on self-amusement during twists of fate .
So I joked about Photoshopping myself with the Northern Lights . It was a worthwhile adventure because I laughed , had epic adventures , and met fellow travelers .
Swimming in the Blue Lagoon , I would hear a different language with surprising levels of natural heat felt every few feet . Finally , after being entranced by the Blue Lagoon , I arrived at the airport to depart the next day . I overheard a couple complaining that they hadn ’ t seen the Northern Lights .
“ What a complete waste of time ,” and “ I can ’ t believe the bad luck ,” I overheard them say .
They made up some artificial rule that their journey would not be incredible unless they saw the Northern Lights . I ’ ve seen rules in coaching thousands of people in fitness . Our rules of “ If this happens ” and “ Then that happens ” influence how we act in our lives .
Does a setback cause you to become bitter , or does it fuel you to become better ? Imagine a setback as a flat tire . Just because one of your emotional tires is flat doesn ’ t mean you should take a psychological knife to the other three and pop them .

Rachael ’ s “ Sweet Delights ”
Recipe Watch
My name is Rachael , and I ’ m the founder of “ Sweet Delights , Pacifica .” I am looking forward to sharing my passion for baking in my Pacifica Anchor section every month . Here is something my mother and I would bake together . I grew up with this recipe for French Puffs , which are reminiscent of donuts but made in a muffin pan . Super easy to put together , and a perfect brunch or breakfast treat for Mother ’ s Day
French Puffs
Makes 2 dozen regular-size muffins or 50 minis ( recipe also doubles well )
Ingredients
• 1 / 3 cup shortening
• ½ cup granulated sugar
• 1 egg
• 1½ cups flour
• 1½ tsp baking powder
• ½ tsp salt
• ½ cup milk
For Coating :
• 8 to 12 tbsp butter or margarine
• cinnamon sugar ( at least ½ cup )
Prepare A Muffin Tin By Greasing Well .
Preheat oven to 350 degrees . Cream together the shortening , sugar , and egg until well mixed . Stir in flour , baking powder , and salt until just combined . Stir in milk to mix . Scoop batter into greased tin and bake about 20 minutes . ( If making minis , I would adjust the time down , but do keep an eye on them and test for doneness with a toothpick inserted into the middle until it just comes out clean ).
Let them cool until you are able to handle them . Melt margarine or butter . Roll each muffin in the melted mixture , then roll in the cinnamon sugar . For extra richness , dunk and roll twice !
The finished muffins freeze very well .
See you online , around town , and in The Pacifica Anchor .
