Several of these projects underscore how the
University simultaneously harnesses art and
science to affirm its commitment to social
responsibility and public service. Among
them is the project Philippine Bamboo Musical
Instrument Synthesizer. The brainchild of
a research team from the Electrical and
Electronics Engineering Institute of the College
of Engineering (CoE), the project is a fusion of
music and engineering, the product of which is
a software application that enables users to
recreate the sounds of five traditional bamboo
instruments: the kolitong, diwas, takumbo,
gabbang and bungkaka. Another project from
the CoE is a small-engine, high-performance
hybrid vehicle nicknamed Datu. Datu bagged
the “Most Creative Technology for Hybrid Cars”
prize in the 2013 International Student Green Car
Competition held in South Korea.
The CA’s contribution is AVATAR: Sensitivity towards
Site and Context, a design project that addresses the
challenge of creating a healthy and sustainable
workplace for call centers and BPO establishments.
There are also design projects from the College of
Home Economics (CHE), namely, VERDE: ‘Green’
Design for Resort Facilities and Paradox as Design
Inspiration. VERDE, a ‘green’ design for resort
facilities, aims to create a sense of continuity between
outdoor and indoor spaces by using sustainable
materials such as wood and natural fibers, as well as
natural light and indoor plants. In Paradox, two
seemingly contradictory styles (Baroque and
Industrial) are brought together in harmony to create
a chic and livable contemporary living space.
