In Four Maps, One Landscape OVCRD recognized four professors emeriti for their exceptional contribution to their
respective fields. (L-R) Chancellor Caesar Saloma, Dr. Milagros Ibe, Dr. Jose Abueva, Dr. Bienvenido Lumbera, Dr. Edgardo
Gomez, and Vice-Chancellor for Research and Development Benito Pacheco.
are Dr. Jose V. Abueva from the National
College of Public Administration and
Governance, Dr. Edgardo D. Gomez from the
College of Science, Dr. Milagros D. Ibe from
the College of Education, and Dr. Bienvenido
L. Lumbera from the College of Arts and

Dr. Abueva gave an enlightening talk, titled
Political Leadership and Ramon Magsaysay:
‘Servant Leader’ with a Vision of Hope, about
political leadership and public service as
exemplified by one of the country’s former
presidents. Dr. Ibe, who is best known for her
pioneering works on “demystifying Math” and
popularizing otherwise esoteric mathematical
concepts, presented a paper about Thrusts and
Trends in Educational Assessment as Gleaned
from the Testing Efforts of Three Key National
Government Institutions. Drawing from his
experiences in marine science teaching and
research, Dr. Gomez used as backdrop the
topic of Streams of Marine Science Research
to remind the audience about the crucial role
of mentoring in ensuring the growth of any
discipline. Finally, Dr. Lumbera, in his talk
UP Education and the Humanities, underscored
the critical role of the Humanities in nationbuilding and in fostering nationalism.
Speaking from four different perspectives and
about four different topics (four maps),
the professors emeriti provided the audience
with gems of insight about the complex
socio-political landscape of the country.
