Disease Strikes West Africa

368+ dead, 428 confirmed cases. Ebola is spreading rapidly and at an alarming rate.

Ebola is a virus that comes from an infected animal, most likely the fruit bat, which infects monkeys, pigs, and finally humans. It can be passed through body fluids such as blood, saliva, sweat, and urine. Because of the poor conditions in Africa, these types of contact are often many and is affecting many poor African villages. This virus causes people to bleed from their ears and pops open blood vessels. This deadly disease can incubate inside a human body for up to twenty-one days, but the infected person cannot pass on the disease during that period. It is almost always deadly and there is no vaccine or treatment for it. Doctors are getting sick from the virus by trying to help people survive, and due to its rarity, drug companies have not been able to study this disease enough to know everything about it. Health officials are trying their hardest not to cause hysteria over the outbreak because they are trying to avoid riots and violence. This outbreak has baffled doctors, it went from one remote country, & shot to different countries. According to the world bank, there is 1 physician to every 1,000 people, lower than Afghanistan's ratio. Because Ebola isn't airborne, it can only be transmitted by bodily fluid contact, & it begins with flu like symptoms. to decrease where Ebola is spread to, health workers needs to identify all possible cases and get them quarantine them before it spreads. the world health association
