Police seize allegedly stolen pieces of art by master surrealist
A TOTAL of 81 pieces of art by Catalan artist Salvador Dali have been confiscated by police .
The works – which include sketches , lithographs and textiles – are all thought to be either stolen or fakes .
Police raided an art exhibition , which was being held at the Kempinski Hotel in Estepona , and arrested the organiser – a French citizen , who was charged with falsifying documents and fraud . This was after he imported the suspected stolen pieces of art to Spain .
Also seized was a three-metre-high sculpture of an elephant , which has a value of 1.2 million euros ( see photo ).
Officers believe that at least 12 items were stolen from collectors in Spain , Belgium , France and the United States of America .

Olive oil beats breast cancer , claims study
University of Granada finds more health benefits for olives and research shows ladybirds offer insight into organic crops
SCIENTISTS have discovered that olive oil could be effective in the treatment of breast cancer .
A team from the University of Granada found that the oil naturally contains two chemicals used in cancer-fighting drugs .
Around 20 per cent of breast tumours contain a protein called Her2 – which causes this type of cancer to be more virulent than others .
A study in the journal BioMed Central claims that olive oil contains lignans and secoiridoids , two substances that attack this protein in a similar way to traditional medicines , such as Herceptin .
Research leader Javíer Menendez said : “ Our findings reveal for the first time that all major complex phenols in extra-virgin olive oil drastically suppress Her2 in human breast cancer cells .”
Extra-virgin olive oil is the product that results from pressing olives without the use of heat or chemical treatments and so contains nutrients otherwise lost in the refining process .
The researchers isolated the lignans and secoiridoids and tested them against breast cancer cells in the lab .
The authors said although these findings provide new information in the fight against cancer , the concentrations of the two chemicals used in the study were much higher than
can be obtained from food .
“ The findings , together with the fact that that humans have safely been ingesting significant amounts of lignans and secoiridoids as long as they have been consuming olives and extra-virgin oil , strongly suggest that these chemicals may provide an excellent and safe platform for the design of new anti breast-cancer drugs .”
A spokeswoman for Cancer Research UK welcomed the findings . “ We already know that a Mediterranean-style diet can help to protect against cancer , which includes cutting down on saturated fats often found in junk food like chocolate , crisps and cakes .
“ This research is at a very early stage , but the potential of plant chemicals is an exciting area of research that could pave the way for the development of cancer-preventing drugs in the future ,” said Doctor Joanna Owens .
Meanwhile , olive trees laden with ladybirds are a sign that the grove is health and organic .
Researchers have discovered that pest-chomping coccinellids – as the bug is correctly known – prefer pesticide free olive trees to ones sprayed with chemicals .
The insects , according to the University of Granada , is a good sign that the olive crop is organic .
Published in journal Ecological Indicators , the report claims that there were consistently more ladybirds in an organically cultivated grove than in those that used insecticides .
The findings suggest that the insect , which eats pests such as aphids , may serve as an indicator species – animals or plants that give a measure of an ecosystem ’ s health .
“ Ladybirds fulfill all the requirements for a useful bioindicator ,” the study claims .
BOB DOYLE , the last Irish member of the International Brigades , the volunteer units which fought in the Spanish Civil War , has died at the age of 92 .
Doyle was born in Dublin in 1916 to a working class family , and suffered terrible poverty so typical of Ireland in the late 1920s and 1930s .
The social movements of the time showed Bob what his Catholic school had hidden from him : that human beings have rights that a capitalist society does not give out for free – and that they have to be won through constant struggle .
The young Bob adopted a rebellious attitude that saw him join the fight in favour of work and housing and against the wave of facism that was sweeping across Europe .
When the Civil War broke out in Spain , he had no qualms about joining the thousands of anti-fascist volunteers who came to Spain to defend the Republic and democracy .
In March 1938 , he was taken prisoner by an Italain unit and sent to a concentration camp in San Pedro de Cardeña , Burgos , which he left 11 months later .
After World war II , he settled in London , where he married an Asturian emigrant , Lola , and started a family . He and Lola had two sons : Roberto and Julian .
But his real legacy was his constant efforts to fight in the news

defense of the humble and oppressed .
He achieved this as a union man within the graphic arts sector .
He tried to transmit these ideas to the next generation , an objective very much in his mind when he wrote his autobiography , Memoirs .
He also attended many meetings that were organized to remember those who fought for freedom .
We heard his message in Spain on numerous occasions , thanks to his speeches , which went beyond simple nostalgia , often being a call to action .
Many of these orations ended with his favourite phrase : “ Our continuous fight for the freedom of humanity .”
