South Africa Tour Summer 2015
The tour that every sportsman and sportswoman
dreams of …16 days in the tough, unforgiving
landscape and intense sports competition of South
Africa doubled with the beautiful, relaxed atmosphere
of Swaziland! 82 pupils, 6 staff and 2 physios rose to
the challenge posed by this ‘sporting Mecca’ and
enjoyed a thoroughly successful rugby, hockey and
netball tour both on and off the park.
As well as the fixtures, tour highlights included the
Apartheid Museum, SKRUM charity rugby training,
safari in the Kruger National Park, Table Mountain,
Robben Island, Hout Bay, Seal Island and Camps Bay.
OPs based in South Africa also joined in by taking
the opportunity to watch some of the matches along
the way.
Pocklington Prep
‘Wacky Walks’ Fun Day
Pocklington Prep School travelled back in time to
meet a Tudor king, William Wilberforce and World
War II pilots during a Wacky Walks fun day on
Saturday 6 June 2015.
Current pupils and their families joined a fun open day
for the local community, which shared the School’s
rich heritage while providing outdoor activities aimed
at keeping youngsters entertained.
A Mad Professor from the Rusticus Theatre Group
led Wacky Walks through the School and grounds,
following the Prep School’s emphasis on using cocurricular activities to encourage a fun approach to
learning.
The Prof gave visitors a tour of the School and
explained his passion for time travel, then encouraged
youngsters to find a portal in the grounds to whisk
everyone back in time.
First they met boy king Edward VI, who ascended the
throne in 1537, a mere 23 years after Pocklington
School was founded, and were invited to paint his
portrait.
Former Pocklington School pupil William Wilberforce,
who attended 1771-1776, then rounded everyone up
to accompany him on a peace march through the
grounds.
It was there the young walkers met a World War
II airman who told how the nearby airfields were
used during that time. He helped everyone make a
magnificent flying machine to fly them back to “the
present”, and join in the rest of the day’s fun.
Minster FM and the Minster Monster were in
attendance, handing out goody bags, local ice cream
parlour Swirlz provided their delicious selection of ice
creams, and local restaurant Judson’s Bar provided a
BBQ.
Pictured are three generations of Pocklingtonians at
the match against Jan Van Riebeeck High School in
Cape Town (L to R): Luke Hirst (82-92), current pupil
Ed Dare and Gordon Watt (40-48).

Local dance school Pirouette Dance Academy put
on street dance displays, and other activities included
icing biscuits and cakes, egg race games, badge making,
toy pig racing and face painting.
More than 70 families attended the day, which was
free of charge and held with the aim of thanking
the local community for its support. Visitors were
invited to have a look round the school campus and
learn more about the events and people which have
shaped it over 500 years. Activities were planned
around the School’s emphasis on relating learning to
real-life experiences where possible.
Ian Wright, Head of Prep School, said: “The number
of visitors was amazing, there was a really great
atmosphere and a chance to show Pocklington how
much we appreciate being part of the community. It
was great to see so many people taking an interest
in our Prep School and learning more about what
we do here.”
