GYMNASTICS
Thank you to Derek Bradley ( 44-49 ) who kindly loaned us his gym team photographs from his time at school in the mid to late ‘ 40s .
Gymnastics was a popular and important part of the sports programme in the late 1800s and continued well into the twentieth century with regular competitions against other schools and impressive displays at school events such as Commemoration and the 450th anniversary celebrations in 1964 .
Perhaps the most distinguished and inspirational gym instructor at Pocklington over the years was Mason Clarke . He joined the school in 1896 and stayed for forty years until 1936 . In 1899 , he became an English international , representing England against Sweden , and in 1901 , he was English gymnastic champion .
Do you remember doing gymnastics at school ? Who was your instructor ? Did you take part in the gym display team at the 450th anniversary celebrations ?
