Leaving staff were Mr Darren Ayling and Mr Ali Yusaf . Mr Xavier Pick completed an invaluable year as Artist in Residence .
Welcomed to the School were : Colonel Simon Fogden , Bursar ; Mr Aherne , IT ; Miss Osbourne and Mrs Marshall , English ; Miss Brown , Mathematics ; Miss Wilson and Mrs Saunders to teach in the Junior School ; and Mrs Gilfrey Orton to teach pupils with dyslexia .
Mr Tom Taylor and Mr and Mrs Newhouse were congratulated on their marriages and Mrs Tory Gillingham and Mrs Maria Wilson on the births of their offspring .
Several OPs gained First Class Honours at universities : A J C Emmett ( 87-94 ), in Sport and Exercise Science at Carnegie College , Leeds ; N E Hill ( 90-95 ), in Medical Sciences at Nottingham University ; E Beal ( 81-92 ), in Biochemistry at Dundee University ; C Cheney ( 93-95 ), in History at St Anne ’ s College , Oxford .
Several pupil successes were celebrated : Sarah Bosworth ( 91-98 ) gained a place at Christ ’ s College , Cambridge to study Modern Languages ; Lydia Barrett ( 94-99 ) won the Phosyn Scholarship for Sixth Form and further education studies ; Niall Spooner-Harvey ( 93-00 ) won a Hope Award presented by the Wanstead Foundation for displaying courage , kindness and strength of character .
The main dramatic performance was ‘ Dracula ’ and in the summer there was a successful production of the musical ‘ Smike .’ Dolman house won the drama competition and there was an outstandingly wellchoreographed Fashion Show reviewing the past five decades of dress .
Eight concerts took place over the year , including ‘ A party with Jason Carr ( 80-85 ) and special guest
Liza Pulman ’, renowned Composer and Actor / Singer , respectively .
A group of pupils made a video ‘ Water Shortage ,’ which featured in the Hanover Film Festival and won the Environmental Award in the Cooperative Young Filmmakers ’ competition . The team of Mark Rodgers ( 90-01 ), William Atkinson ( 94- 01 ), Tyra Dempster ( 94-99 ), Richard Moulds ( 94-01 ) and Jonathan Hall ( 91-01 ) were presented with their certificates by Coronation Street soap star ‘ Alma Baldwin ’ in the Granada Studios , Manchester .
Senior pupils excelled in the Young Enterprise Competition with two winning distinguished awards . Liz Soutter ( 97-99 ) won best Managing Director from 15 companies after running her artwork company ‘ Artifarti ’ and Lydia Barrett was voted second Best Achiever for her efforts in running ‘ Power ’, a company which printed t-shirts .
A group of staff and pupils from Unirea High School in Romania visited Pocklington in the Lent term , which strengthened links between the two schools . In the Summer term , Mr Donaldson and Mr Cordery travelled to Romania to deliver and install computers provided by Pocklington School .
Richard Poskitt ( 93-98 ) led a resilient 1st XV to four victories over strong opposition and enjoyed playing for Yorkshire during the rugby season . Chris Kendra ( 91-98 ) went on to captain Yorkshire and to have trials for the North . The U14 XV won all its matches .
The Cricket 1st XI had a mixed season , but Paul Mouncey ( 88-98 ) was an outstanding captain with 824 runs , including three centuries and 42 wickets . Richard Poskitt scored 616 runs including a century . Richard Owen ( 93-02 ) and Richard Booth ( 92- 02 ) represented East Yorkshire and North Lincolnshire U14s and Iain Gladstone ( 92-03 ) the U13s .
The Tennis 1st VI reached the northeast Final of the Glanville Cup . Oliver Moore ( 88-99 ) and Richard Booth ( 91-99 ) reached the semi-finals of the U18 Yorkshire Boys ’ Doubles Championship . Booth also played for Yorkshire and the northeast at U16 level and Tom Burn ( 96-98 ) for Yorkshire U14s . Richard and Hannah Booth ( 92-02 ) won the North Yorkshire Schools ’ Mixed Doubles Championship . Tom Burn ( 96-98 ) and Adam Pinion ( 91-02 ) were semi-finalists in the U14 Northern Schools ’ Championships . The U14 VI won the York and District League and the U15s and U13 teams reached the northeast knockout round of the Midland Bank Trophies .
The Girls ’ Tennis VI reached the regional semi-final of the Aberdare Cup and the U15 VI won all its games including the Midland Bank Trophy matches . Amy Fletcher ( 96-01 ) won the U16 girls ’ York Tyke Petroleum Championship .
The U15 Trampolining team reached the zonal semi-finals in Newcastle and the U15 Boys won the Yorkshire and North Midlands Competition .
The Girls ’ U15 Hockey XI won the East Riding Tournament and several represented Humberside : Stephanie Jackson ( 92-99 ) and Katie Southcott ( 89-99 ) ( U19 ); Caroline Henley ( 93-00 ) and Lindsay Crab ( 96-00 ) ( U17 ); Helen Broadbridge ( 96-99 ), Martha Hammond ( 94-01 ) and Stephanie Kirtley ( 96-01 ) ( U15 ); Amie Taylor ( 95-02 ) and Nicola Sanderson ( 95-02 ) ( U14 ).
Exchanges , tours , camps and activities took place in South Africa ( Rugby and Hockey Tour ), Lyon ( French Exchange ) and Les Menuires ( Ski Trip ) in France , Spain , Wales , The Peak District , Penhale ( CCF Army ), RAF Waddington ( CCF RAF ), Blackpool , Chigwell and Alnmouth .
