FAREWELL is. For Dave, teaching is a vocation and good lessons paramount in his thinking. Throughout his career he has always thrown himself into school life both inside and outside the classroom with great professionalism as a team player and a leader. One of his favourite trips was Bewerley Park where he got to see a different side to the children and spend time with staff. Sport also played a big part in Dave’s extra-curricular commitment to the school and he was involved with just about everything! Amongst his sporting highlights are winning the HMC Cricket in 2006 and winning the Yorkshire Girls’ Hockey Cup in 2007. Dave has always had a great understanding of sport but more importantly he understands the children’s psyche, something which sets him apart as a coach and as a teacher. Jonathan was a lovely, supportive colleague, a good listener and always bothered about the children in his care. I wish him all the best for the future and if ever you need a Viking expert, Mr Ott is the one to call! (EK) DAVE TYRRELL (01-19) Friendly, knowledgeable, wise, caring, fair, honest, selfless, funny, charismatic, a family man. As friends, colleagues, pupils and OPs will testify, these are just a few of the many qualities and attributes that make Dave Tyrrell the exceptional person and teacher he With 68 years’ dedicated service to the school between them, Dot and Margaret retired in December 2018. For many years they worked in the laundry at Fenwick-Smith House and prior to that in Dolman House. Honest, reliable, hardworking and good-humoured, they carried out their duties with the utmost speed and efficiency, making sure the bedlinen and towels were washed and ironed and keeping the boys’ clothes looking clean and smart on a daily basis. Thank you to two of the school’s unsung heroes! (RD) MARY ROBERTS (94-19) Reflecting on his career, Dave considers himself lucky to have taught with great people all through his teaching life and will miss working with excellent colleagues. One thing he won’t miss is any type of paperwork! His plans for retirement include continuing to put his wife, Anne, his two girls, Lauren (01-07) and Ruth (01-12), and his mum Beryl top of his priority list, playing golf on a more regular basis and hopefully travelling more frequently to Perth, Australia to see daughter Ruth. (RD/RP) MARGARET CLARK (81-18) AND DOT HALL (89-18) Mary Roberts joined Pocklington School 25 years ago and quickly became a popular member of the administration team. She was dedicated to the school and everyone within its community, whether they were pupils, staff, or parents. Throughout her time at the school, Mary became the first port of call for many colleagues across the years needing help or guidance on administrative matters. Mary was always willing to help, often going above and beyond to ensure that work would be perfect and completed in time, even if requests may have been a little late in arriving! In retirement, Mary is looking forward to travelling and spending more time visiting her family in the UK and Ireland. Thank you Mary for your care and commitment and we wish you well for the future.
