Bubbly, charismatic, inspirational, dedicated, a true Scot, reliable, supportive and a passionate MFL teacher are some of the words that describe Dave. He is passionate about his subject and indeed how he teaches it; always looking at new ways of doing things and getting to the bottom of what it is that helps pupils learn a language most effectively. His dedication to and passion for his subject saw him run 18 German exchanges and as many A Level study trips to Berlin which all hugely contributed to pupils’ understanding and appreciation of German language and culture. Dave always went above and beyond for all of his pupils and cared deeply about their learning – the fifth year German revision packs included a hand- written personal “good luck” note to each pupil along with a bag of Haribo as a revision aid. He also writes personalised poems to the U6th before they start the next chapter of their lives. Dave’s talents stretch way beyond the classroom. A highlight of his time at Pocklington was his stunning performance in the Musical Theatre Society’s extravaganza where he performed Stick it to the Man from The School of Rock in the finale. His impressive vocals have also been heard at Party at Pock, in school bands, in the staff/pupil choir and in Music Society performances. A few years ago he also wrote the lyrics to the school version of The Threepenny Opera. Dave embodies the “Spirit of Pock” and it is this spirit that makes the school and its community what it is. (NSS) MARTIN KETTLEWELL (99-19) As Director of Music at Pocklington School, not only is Martin adept at working with musicians to improve technical aspects about a piece, but, more importantly, he conveys the pleasure there is to be experienced from performing. For him, the most important thing about music is that everyone is enjoying themselves! Herr Galloway. Dave. Daggers. Blue through and through for 20 years. The Galloway-Pocklington era started in 1999 and he has supported, guided and inspired literally hundreds of pupils during their time at Pocklington School whether it was in the German classroom, on the sports field, on trips and exchanges or indeed with his vocal talents…! Dave has worn many hats during his time at Pocklington (including his infamous inflatable birthday cake hat) as well as many ties (apparently he has around 300!). Not only has he taught German to the full range of year groups, he has been a rugby coach, i/c golf, did an impressive stint as Dolman 34 soon became the largest of all. He corralled all this vocal potential in the school chamber choir whose performances were highly regarded throughout the East Riding and beyond. He took the Swing Band to a new level; the pieces played were more challenging and the tours ventured further afield to places like Romania, Spain and Berlin. Martin also oversaw a decade of Romanian Music Scholarships. Many returned for the Quincentenary concert that Martin organised for the school’s 500th anniversary in 2014: Roxana Popescu, Georgi Fodor, Ioana Ilie, Georgi Chiriac, and Alexandra Dariescu. Alexandra also performed at the school in 2016 and 2019. That these and many other OPs return to visit Martin is a testament to the regard in which he is held. Martin also led the co-curricular programme with great skill for many years, introducing the Pocklington Award to encourage younger pupils to participate in many diverse activities and older ones to take responsibility for the organisation and running of them. He was an ISI Inspector and the school benefitted from his experience. His attention to detail ensured the school was fully compliant with DfE regulations and it was only fitting that the inspectors came in his final year to give him one last opportunity to prove himself! Newly appointed, Martin had his first challenge: a service at York Minster, in which a choir from Pocklington School was invited to sing an anthem. So began ‘MK’s’ Music Society: an invited group of eager parents and staff complementing the school choir, as they took on Achieved Is The Glorious Work from Haydn’s Creation. Thank you Martin and all the very best for the years to come. He took the Music Society established by his predecessor and shaped it into a new, enlarged vehicle which anyone with a zeal for singing or playing could jump on board and experience the thrill of a “big concert”, including requiems (Mozart, Verdi, Fauré and Duruflé), masses and other large scale works for choir and orchestra. Jonathan Ott was the best Viking around! He would lead the Year 4 Vikings on a raid which would result in getting all the treasure from Dolman House. He was a brilliant historian and taught me a lot during the time we worked together. I learnt how to build a round house, the importance of the Celts and of course how to raid a monastery. I attended Bewerley Park with Jonathan on many occasions. He was very organised and always ensured that everyone had a brilliant time. He always enjoyed a breakfast of healthy...Cocopops! Martin’s passion for singing was clear in other ways too. He was swift to appoint a peripatetic singing teacher and the list of pupils on this timetable (TEWT, AW, RD) JONATHAN OTT (02-19)
