team to an exciting win. Atkinson accumulated 60
and Baty 34. Pixies motored to Haywards Heath on
Tuesday and returned to batting first. Chris Suddaby
having scored a fine 78 fell just before lunch with
the total at 140 for 3. Meanwhile Burdett had
joined Rob Milne and the pair took the score to
178 before Milne was out for 40. After the in terval
Burdett took control and powered his way to 103
not out enabling skipper Henry Mitchell to declare
on 310 for 8.
A few late call offs caused a minor headache for the
61st tour particularly in the bowling department but
in the end all worked out and Malcolm Woodruff
was again on hand to record events. See his full tour
report below.
For the final game of the season against the Men
of Derwent for the Alasdair Swann Trophy the
only problem was not being able to select all those
available to play! Andy Inns playing his 158th game
for the Pixies and closing in on the record for most
appearances led the team to victory. Six members of
Alasdair’s family played for the MoD and Jackie and
Caroline again provided a sumptuous tea! In a total
of 193, Steve Burdett, Jack Bolam and Matt Durkin
all reached forty and seven bowlers took a wicket
apiece when the ‘Men’ fell 13 short of their victory
target enabling the Pixies to regain the Trophy.
Well over 500 games have been played by the Pixies
since the first one in 1956 and hopefully another 500
will take place by 2056 in spite of a little re-jigging
of the tour fixture list. To do this Charlie Lambert
and his ‘merry band of helpers’ will need the same
support that I have had over the past years (eg: 29
players and 4 officials this year) and they will need
the school to continue to turn out their conveyor
belt of talented cricketers. As always, thanks also
go to the school and the OP Association for their
support in numerous ways. I hope all those playing
in future fixtures get the same enjoyment I have had.

authoritative stand between Paul van Dijk and
Steve Burdett (36) of 89 redeemed the situation.
However, after Burdett’s departure Pixies again fell
away, despite van Dijk’s resolute 89, leaving the hosts
to make 199 to win.
PIXIES 52ND TOUR TO KENT
AND SUSSEX AUGUST 2016
Ed Lambert and Adam Iyer had Holmesdale at 24
for 3 but numbers four, five and six contributed 132
between them to restore the balance. Four more
wickets fell but the home side secured the victory.
Iyer finished with a commendable four for 75 in 17
overs.
Pixies first tour match was, as ever, against
Holmesdale at Riverhead. They batted first and the
innings was opened by debutants Jacob Smith and
Ben Lumb. The former made an enterprising 23
before being dismissed. Unfortunately, numbers two,
four and five were removed quite cheaply although
Jonty Atkinson made a useful 25 at the other end.
At 68 for 5 the visitors were struggling but an
Day two took the tourists to Eastbourne in a 40
overs per side game. Eastbourne batted first and
scored 202 in their allotted overs. Seven Pixie
bowlers took a wicket apiece and Alistair Wood
retuned 3 for 15. The visitors progressed steadily
in reply with solid innings of 33 and 42 from Iyer
and Wood respectively. Then George Baty making
his debut, joined Atkinson and they steered their
20
Haywards responded well with five batsmen all
making useful contributions. But with Suddaby, Joey
Moore and Iyer each taking a couple of wickets and
John Burrans recording 3 for 66 they were all out
for 261.
Marden entertained Pixies on Wednesday with the
visitors again batting first. The innings was dominated
by an unbeaten 107 from opener Charlie Lambert
with quick-fire knocks of 35 and 67 by Moore and
Jack Bolam. Pixies declared at 251 for 5. Again the
hosts replied well providing their own unbeaten
centurion in Felix Dew. Opening bowler Guy
Brumfield took a wicket in his sixth over and fellow
opener Iyer in his seventh to give Pixies hope.
However, Dew really began to assert himself and
Marden coasted home with the loss of one further
wicket. This is the first time that Marden have beaten
Pixies for 23 years and they celebrated royally with
champagne!
The final match was against Hastings once more
using the 40 over format. Pixies totalled 196 for 9
mainly courtesy of openers Miles Picknett (45) and
Suddaby (69). Thereafter their batsmen struggled to
cope with the bowling of Matt Connor (affectionately
known as Burger) who achieved 6 for 31 in six overs.
Not to be outdone, Hastings’ openers put on over a
hundred for the first wicket before top scorer Harry
Scowen was dismissed for 72. Burdett later took
two wickets in successive overs and Simon Baty
took a catch off his own bowling after Baty junior
had also struck (they are the eleventh father and
son partnership to take the field for Pixies). In the
meantime, Hastings moved on to their target with
overs to spare.
Malcolm Milne, Graham Thurlow (aka Cilla) and
Malcolm Woodruff shared the bulk of the umpiring
and scoring duties. Also, it was good to see Club
President Tim Hughes and archivist Marcus Townend
in attendance over the week. Although the results
may have been a trifle disappointing there seems
little doubt that all concerned thoroughly enjoyed
the occasion.
Finally, after 54 tours (two in North Wales), Malcolm
Milne, Honorary Secretary, player, former captain,
fixture secretary, official mini bus driver et al has
decided to hand over the mantle. Charlie Lambert
will be his successor. The list of roles occupied by
Malcolm speaks for itself and I am sure that all Pixies
who have benefited from his efforts over the years
would wish to thank him for his dedication, hard
work and friendship. It only remains to wish Charlie
well in the future.
