SCHOOL DEVELOPMENT
UPDATE – THE CAMPAIGN
FOR A NEW ART & DESIGN
TECHNOLOGY CENTRE
In 2015 the school launched a major campaign to
raise funds for a new Art and Design Technology
Centre in support of the next phase of the
school’s strategic development plan. Thanks to
the tremendous generosity of all those who have
supported the Campaign so far and boosted by a
significant contribution from Old Pocklingtonian
Brian Fenwick-Smith (43-54), in autumn 2016 we
were delighted to announce that the Campaign total
had reached £1,700,000.
The challenge is still to reach the Campaign target of
£2,000,000. Whilst construction of the new building
began on 1 August 2016, the Campaign continues
and a second Campaign Progress Report has just
been issued to update everyone..

INSPIRING CREATIVE MINDS –
STUDENTS’ CAMPAIGN LOGO
DESIGN
A team of upper sixth Art and Photography
students were the creative force behind a set of
striking graphics to use on promotional material
for the Art & Design Technology Centre Campaign.
Sofia Risso-Gill, Dan Brown and Georgie Fenny used
a mix of art, design and photography techniques to
create the designs, to bring to life the Campaign’s
theme of ‘inspiring creative minds’.
Designed to inspire the pursuit of traditional arts
and crafts, plus provide cutting edge facilities for
digital imaging, editing, animation and computeraided design and manufacturing technology, the new
Centre will greatly enhance the pupils’ experience.
new Art and Design Technology Centre and we look
forward to coming back to visit in the future.” Sofia
is planning to study Graphic Communications and
both Dan and Georgie plan to take Art Foundation
courses.
The new Centre will continue the Art and Design
Technology Departments’ long tradition of
innovation and inspiration, fostering cross-fertilisation
between the different disciplines, while maintaining a
watchful eye for new ideas and technology. It also
incorporates the space to display students’ creations,
to provoke debate and inspire others.
Although an ambitious project, it is one the school
believes will prove invaluable for generations to
come.
According to a survey for the World Economic
Forum report ‘The Future of Jobs’, creativity will be
in the top three qualities sought by employers from
the world’s largest economies by 2020. Employers
said creative people would be particularly in
demand to figure out ways to apply new technology
and create new products and services. By creating
the right environment to develop creative skills,
Pocklington School can inspire its pupils to lead the
way into this exciting future.

CREATIVE CLAYS AT
RAISTHORPE MANOR
The winning team, Reuben’s Rangers, led by team
captain and OP Andrew Wraith, at the Pocklington
School Campaign Clay Shooting Competition.
Pocklington School w elcomed over 70 guests to
Raisthorpe Manor, near Malton, in June to enjoy a
clay shooting competition organised to raise funds
for the school’s Campaign for a new Art and Design
Technology Centre.
Hosted by former parents, David and Julia Medforth
of Raisthorpe Manor, teams of eight shooters and
loaders travelled around the grounds to shoot
five drives with 100 clays off each stand. Although
rain delayed the start of the event, guests took the
opportunity to have extra refreshments and enjoy
the welcoming interior of the Shooting Lodge
before heading out onto the ground to begin the
competition.
A number of spectators travelled round with the
teams to cheer them on, and once all the drives had
been completed, everyone returned to the Shooting
12
Lodge to enjoy a hog roast and buffet. Following
the buffet, David Medforth revealed the winning
team to be Reuben’s Rangers, headed by team
captain Andrew Wraith (80-85), who were each
presented with individual trophies and mementoes
from Raisthorpe. The Silcoate’s Scribblers were
placed second with the Hockney High Guns a very
close third.
Mark Ronan, Headmaster, said: “This was a really
successful event and we were delighted to welcome
current parents and students, Old Pocklingtonians,
former parents and a wide range of friends and
colleagues to enjoy it with us. Raisthorpe Manor
is a wonderful venue and gave us the perfect
opportunity to raise more funds for our Campaign
for a new Art and Design Centre.”
