1. Augustus

In first place, we obviously have Octavian, better known as Augustus. When Augustus first came to power, the Roman empire was falling apart after the death of his uncle, Julius Caesar. He and Mark Antony were in a struggle for power, sparking a civil war. Augustus would end the war by defeating Antony at Actium. Because of his willingness to share power, Rome was guided into a period of peace known as the 'Pax Romana. This period of peace lasted almost 200 years.
