OFFICERS
SUMMARY OF SEASON
M
aple Syrup production in the Hoosier
state was down from previous years due
to a very warm spell during the middle of Feb-
ruary. The statewide average tapping date was
Feb. 5 and the statewide closing date was Mar.
7. This indicates that it was a very short season.
Man producers tapped in January, which is un-
usual and were done by the third week of February. The state-
wide average sugar content was slightly less than 2 percent.
Buckets and bags continue to be the most popular method
of collecting sap, but the use of tubing and vacuum is gain-
ing throughout the state. The total number of taps in Indiana
increased by 18 percent over 2016. Even though it was a short
season, some producers reported an almost average year.
Only a few exceeded an average year, but for most producers,
the total syrup made fell well below previous seasons.
