SUMMARY OF SEASON
M
aple syrup production in New York was
up again in 2015 with the most syrup
since the early 1940’s. Early season was not
very encouraging as the start was late and the
snow deep. Super soft powder snow 30 inches deep was common and even with snow
shoes we sank in 12 - 14 inches. The lack of any
mid winter thaw accounted for the powder to
keep piling up.
Colder temperatures made for a later start with March 1213 typical for the lower elevations of the state. By March 26,
only 20 to 30 % of a crop had been produced and it looked
like a poor season was in store. Then, between March 26 to
April 10 it was fast and furious. In about 12 days over 60% of
the crop was produced.
Sap was sweeter than its been in awhile with 2.4 - 2.5 Sugar
lasting late into the season. The sap also wanted to flow
even at 32 - 33 degrees and if your vacuum system system
was tight, kept flowing down to 28 degrees. Mother nature
made it tough on us early season but if we persevered she
rewarded us late season.
