I was accused last month by someone on Facebook that I only run this magazine so I can get a load of free stuff. My answer was ‘we should be so lucky!’ It would be fantastic if that was the case but I think as a regional magazine we’re pretty far off from those halycon days when I started in journalism when press trips were de rigeur and free stuff seemed to fall out of the sky. It just doesn’t happen. I actually run this magazine because I love doing it. It’s never been about status or getting free stuff. I definitely wouldn’t be doing it now if it was as there’s only so much disappointment a person can take! We occasionally get free entry to gigs but that is usually for us to write about said gigs and we get CDs for us to review. I guess they count. But that’s about it. I took the family to Alton Towers this month and have written about it in our new travel section. But, I’m writing about it because I happened to go there not because we got free tickets (unless you count the Tesco Clubcard vouchers we had saved up to get one day’s free entry to the park!) But if there’s any holiday companies out there who want to offer us free trips please do! We’ve also introduced a new motoring section this month as you never know! (I’m keeping my fingers crossed for a Jaguar F-Type!)
