Get Away

A padlocked door yesterday

The great escape

For our new travel section Jamie Hill went all the way to Bristol to get locked in a room with a few friends . As you do .
By Jamie Hill When we started this travel section I had visions of golden sandy beaches and a cocktail in hand .
But so far I ’ ve been to Stoke .. urm ... and now Bristol .
But Bristol ’ s lovely I hear you say what with its bohemian bonhomie and its nautical history .
Even the locals have one of the greatest accents that England has to offer . Yeah , but ... No , but it has . Bristol is a city with character . Restaurants and venues galore add to its stunning night life .
Archictecture and history also abound .
But I didn ’ t get to see any of that as I was locked in a room with no windows .
In fact I was locked in a room , handcuffed to my wife . With two other handcuffed couples .
This is beginning to sound a bit
8 www . theocelot . co . uk sordid isn ’ t it ? In fact , we were taking part in City Mazes where you get locked in a room and have to work your way through the clues to try and get out within an hour .
It ’ s a bit like the Crystal Maze but without Richard O ’ Brien frantically running around you in circles like a kid who has had too many Skittles .
There were six of us in total doing the ‘ locked room ’ experience and when we pulled into the car park of what seemed to be an unassuming portakabin on an industrial estate I must admit I thought to myself that this was going to be letdown .
The challenge that we had booked ourselves in for was City Maze ’ s hardest escape and it was called Hostage Hostel .
It was spread across two rooms , once we were handcuffed and sealed in . We had to find the clues to get out of the first room into the second one , as well as the keys to the handcuffs and finally the code to get out the main door .
It was pretty dark and just a tiny bit scary .
But all six of us immediately really got into the spirit turning things over looking for clues , shouting out things to each other , using torches , and generally being a bit like the A Team .
It was great . I don ’ t think there was a single one of us that didn ’ t do their bit . We got out within 45 minutes which is pretty damn good .
And we were over the moon until we looked at the wall of fame and saw that there was one group who had got out within 28 minutes .
Well , at least we got our money ’ s worth . And there were some people who didn ’ t even get out within the hour and had to give up .
And , unless I was hearing things , I ’ m sure I heard a scream or two from the people who never got out . www . citymazes . com / bristol
