The Obesity Epidemic Dec. 2012 | Page 3

“Nobody in this country, or in smaller terms Richmond, should be proud to have the label of obese” (Hannah Nguyen). We are taking food for granted and abusing the use of it by not eating healthy. Therefore, people are becoming obese and not realizing the later effects. Do you remember the last time you had a vigorous workout? Richmond, being the second most obese city in America, really needs to practice much healthier and beneficial lifestyles.

It is predicted that by around 2020 Richmond’s obesity rate should rise to about fifty percent. That is not including the number of overweight people that would be around forty percent. That leaves approximately ten percent of healthy people that may fall into the trap those life-threatening weight issues. In my opinion, I think that the minimum amount of exercise a day should rise, more fast food chains closed, and more inspiring looking gyms opened. I took an Average Virginian and asked him why he liked to eat. His response “Because I like the taste of food.” (Ethan Nguyen). Another thing that I strongly believe in is, it does not matter what you eat, as long as you exercise to keep it in moderation.

My advice to those of you who think that you may be victims of these problems, see a doctor for further information on how to exercise efficiently through your everyday lives and not having to go to the gym every time to work out. Anytime you feel like taking a bite out of that juicy burger, just think to yourself why you are actually doing it. Are you hungry or are you just craving the taste? If you are just craving the taste, maybe try a healthier snack that might not make you feel so sluggish after eating. For the most part as long as you are eating in moderation and getting enough daily vigorous exercise you should be fine.
