Summer camps offer unique opportunities for Scouting Advancement . It is one of the reasons Scouts and parents value the summer camp experience . All Spirit Of Adventure Camps offer instruction and counseling for Scouts working on completion of Merit Badges . We follow the requirements and the guide of “ no more , no less ”.
Merit Badge Advancement at the NeXus is Scout initiated , Scout researched , and Scout learned . It is hands-on and interactive , and not modeled after a typical school classroom setting . Instead , it is meant to be an active program so enticing to young men that they will want to take responsibility for their own full participation .
Once a camp counselor has reviewed the signed Application for Merit Badge , he or she begins the discussions about what the Scout already knows . This is followed with coaching , guidance , not only for passing the candidate on the requirements , but also to help him understand the subject .
T . L . STORER : In the morning the program offers pre-scheduled structured advancement sessions . This year Scouts will have the opportunity to work on an unlimited amount of badges . The camp will prepare a list of badges and the typical amount of time it takes to complete . In the beginning of each badge the Scout will have the opportunity to demonstrate his skills . If he demonstrates proficiency in the area he has completed the requirement and is free to move on to other subjects or stay for the remaining instructional period .
WAH-TUT-CA : Advancement is structured like a Montessori school . Scouts can work on advancement at their own pace anytime they wish . There are some structured instructional sessions . Wah-Tut-Ca ’ s program areas are open from morning breakfast to sunset . Advancement is in a natural setting , similar to how a badge is earned at home .
In both camps preparation is key . A Scout should read and understand the Merit Badge Requirements before he gets to camp . This way he can focus on gaining the instruction and skills to pass the requirement .
The Northern NeXus of Adventure is connected to New England Base Camps . A consistent merit badge program has been established enabling Scouts who have earned partials at camp to complete their badge at a New England Base Camp .
