Dear Editor,

I am deeply concerned about the issue of unity in our country. I personally voted for Polk for him to bring Texas in as a state, which I originally thought would help us, but might it hurt our fine nation instead? A big part of why Texas and Mexico did not clash well had to do with laws concerning slavery, if Texas is annexed into state-hood then what will become of it? It will undoubtably be a slavery state but due to it's sheer size I'm concerned of it over powering the north along with other states. I fear that it may further seperate opinions regarding slavery between the north and the south. My personal belief is that slavery should be outlawed, but I also believe in perserving the union. I appreciate Polk's strong views and determination, but I can see seperation already starting. I fear the United States may not be as united as was once thought. I respect Polk's ambitions, but maybe it would be for the better if he took a step back and thought about the decisions he was making before he acted upon them.

Sincerely,

Janet Sham
