It ' s true to say that some bands are what you might call more straightforward ' rock and roll ' outfits that probably wouldn ' t require anything more than a fairly ' standard ' kind of ' engineer ' mix, and solo artists may not require a huge amount of input from the sound engineer, but for bands writing and performing original music that has been honed and perfected during hours of studio time could use a ' live music producer ' to assist in converting their recordings into more engaging and entertaining live performances and this would require someone who ' s role is to go a little beyond that of a typical live sound engineer.
So it seems to me that if bands are going to re-create their studio endeavours in the live arena they really need more than just a soundman. They really need a live music producer. Somebody familiar with the material, who can really convert the songs and pieces into powerful and engaging live music experiences.
Someone who understands exactly how each instrument is meant to sound, the right vocal processing and effects, and how these may change from song to song and within songs. It may also not just be about re-creating studio versions of songs for the stage. Very often the performance of a song may be changed from the studio version for it to ' work ' better on stage or to deliver a more powerful engaging performance. It may be extended with longer instrumental sections, intro and / or outro.

The possibilities are endless, but you need someone behind the desk who really understands the music and the performance. A live music producer. Not just a sound person.
So whether you ' re a seasoned band organising your umpteenth tour, or just setting out with occassional gigs, consider your choice of technical partner. Choose someone who can really contribute to the artistic process rather than just plug in and ' mix '. Sound engineers who are also experienced musicians and studio engineers are great for these roles and worth their weight in gold.
How powerful and engaging you are as a live act is now more important than ever to a band ' s success, or failure. Producing shows that set you apart from other artists, regardless of genre are essential to an artist ' s career success. Choosing a sound partner that understands and contributes to this should be ann essential part of your live music strategy.
