April 2026 | The New Jersey Police Chief Magazine 48
Continued from page 23
For a Chief who had been on the job for less than a week, this was an unparalleled resource. I was surrounded by seasoned veterans and fellow new Chiefs alike. We discussed:
• The First 100 Days: What to prioritize and what to delegate.
• Cultural Shift: How to implement a new vision without alienating the rank and file.
• Political Navigation: Managing expectations with city councils and the public.
These weren ' t just professional acquaintances; they became lifelong friends. We built a level of trust that can only be forged through shared travel and the collective experience of representing New Jersey on a global stage.
The Domestic Dividend: A Network on Speed Dial
The true value of the NJSACOP retreat didn ' t end when we touched back down in the States. In fact, that was just the beginning. The " Scotland Delegation " became a living, breathing resource.
When I returned to Bridgeton to truly begin my tenure, I didn ' t return alone. I returned with a " Brain Trust " of Chiefs across New Jersey. If a specific crisis hit Bridgeton, I had a dozen people I could text who I knew would answer immediately. If I was considering a new policy on body-worn cameras or community policing, I could call a colleague from the trip and ask, " How did you handle this?"
This network is a force multiplier. It prevents the " silo effect " that often plagues law enforcement. Instead of Bridgeton being an island, it is part of a sophisticated web of shared intelligence and support.
Final Thoughts: Why Every Leader Needs This
The NJSACOP leadership retreats are an investment in the stability and sophistication of our departments. They take us out of our comfort zones— whether that ' s onto the hallowed ground of Gettysburg or across the Atlantic— and force us to think bigger.
For me, the journey from Bridgeton to Scotland and back was the defining chapter of my start as Chief. It gave me the confidence to lead, the humility to learn, and most importantly, a brotherhood of leaders that ensures I never have to face the challenges of the office alone.
