April 2026 | The New Jersey Police Chief Magazine 16
As New Jersey’ s First Assistant Attorney General and Principal Law Enforcement Advisor for over four years, she worked with law enforcement leaders and prosecutors across New Jersey’ s 21 counties to promote public safety, with a heavy emphasis on tackling gun crimes, combatting the opioid crisis, and strengthening trust between law enforcement and the communities they serve.
That experience laid the foundation for her term as Attorney General as she leads the 8,000-plus employees of the Department of Law and Public Safety.
The Department has 24 divisions and offices, such as the Division of Criminal Justice, the New Jersey State Police, and the Office of Policing Strategy and Innovation, and its responsibilities touch upon nearly every aspect of life in New Jersey.
AG Davenport’ s priorities include protecting New Jersey communities from gun violence; combating human trafficking; protecting children’ s rights and safety; promoting a robust affordability agenda; and protecting New Jersey residents from attacks on their pocketbooks and their rights coming out of Washington, D. C.
Shootings in New Jersey have reached historic lows, and Davenport is focused on using strict enforcement of our criminal laws, civil lawsuits aimed at the firearm industry, intelligence sharing between all levels of law enforcement, and violence prevention efforts to combat gun violence.
And, with the first FIFA World Cup 2026 matches just a few months away, AG Davenport is highlighting the need for law enforcement agencies at the local, county, state, and federal levels to coordinate their work to combat human trafficking.
The Attorney General is keenly aware that, with millions of fans and soccer enthusiasts set to descend on North America, the tournament will likely draw those who engage in and profit from human trafficking. As a mother of two daughters, she also understands the concerns of New Jersey parents struggling to keep their children safe in the digital age. That means keeping pace with technology and using both criminal prosecutions and civil actions to stop predators and the social media giants and tech companies that too often give would-be predators the means and the cover to interact with children.
AG Davenport, who served with Governor Sherrill in the U. S. Attorney’ s Office, is also committed to making New Jersey more affordable in keeping with the Governor’ s affordability agenda. As Attorney General, she oversees the Division of Consumer Affairs, which is charged with enforcing the state’ s consumer protection laws.
And, AG Davenport will continue to take action when the federal government acts unlawfully and harms New Jersey residents, whether that means infringing on their freedoms or impacting their finances. Recently, AG Davenport led the fight to stop the Trump Administration from cutting off funding for the much-needed Gateway Tunnel project, an essential part of the infrastructure that will keep trains running between New Jersey and New York for decades to come.
Joining her New York counterpart, Attorney General Tish James, AG Davenport successfully took the administration to court to ensure funds would continue to flow to the massive infrastructure project, protecting thousands of New Jersey jobs in the process.
