LEADERSHIP BOOKSHELF

“ Luck” becomes an amplifier— positive or negative— of the systems already in place.
A Leadership Message for Today’ s Chiefs After reviewing thousands of pages of corporate history, Collins and Hansen close with a simple, powerful conclusion: Greatness is a matter of disciplined choice, not circumstance. For police leadership, this means:
• We don’ t control the environment.
• We don’ t control the timing of crises.
• We don’ t control the political cycles or the media landscape. But we do control the systems we build, the discipline we maintain, the culture we shape, and the way we prepare our agencies for the inevitable storm.
In an age of unpredictable public safety challenges, the leaders who guide their organizations with discipline, empirical decision-making, productive vigilance, and consistent strategy will be the ones who thrive— not by luck, but by choice.
