FROM THE PRESIDENT ’ S DESK CHIEF JOHN RUSSO , RUTHERFORD PD
The New Jersey Police Chief Magazine | September 2024
As September rolls in and we begin our transition from summer activities and relaxation to a new school year and preparation for our fall activities , so too is the transition to another year of NJSACOP Monthly meetings . These meetings have proven to be a wealth of information for Chiefs and while the meeting schedule took its annual summer hiatus , the Executive Board remained hard at work .
During July and August , we have met several times with the Attorney General and his team to discuss our concerns with recent actions of the PTC Commission . Our Legal Aid committee continued to fight the good fight on several fronts , pushing back and educating those elected officials and administrators who feel they can try to trounce a police chief ’ s rights . We also continued to monitor our first round of license renewals .
The remainder of 2024 is looking to be a busy time for the NJSACOP so I encourage you all to free up calendar space to ensure your attendance at our monthly meetings .
I would like to congratulate and thank Chief Ed Kerr for his successful presidency . It was a pleasure serving as his vice president and the Monmouth County Chiefs were a pleasure to work with as the Bergen County Chiefs began planning their responsibilities for the 112th Annual Conference and Expo . Speaking of the conference , what an amazing experience for my county association and me . I have attended and enjoyed our conference for over a decade ; however , until this past conference , I did not realize what an immense amount of effort goes into its planning . Our conference and expo are well-oiled machines and that is thanks to the hard work and dedication of Mitch Sklar , Melissa Gaines and Jennifer Conover . The Bergen County Police Chiefs also did an amazing job with the networking portion of the week . I hope you enjoyed this year ’ s conference and Host Chief ’ s Night .
Finally , let us take time to acknowledge the thousands of lives lost and the actions of countless heroes during the tragic events 23 years ago . The Manhattan skyline is viewable from many streets here in Rutherford and every day when I see One World Trade , I am brought back to that terrible day . Whether it ’ s a split-second flashback or a deeper reflection , I can ’ t help but be proud of this profession I chose and the amazing officers and law enforcement leaders this state has . Please take some time this month to remember those lost and continue to keep your own self -care and wellness a priority .
