SUBJECT :
New Temporary License Plates
NJMVC will begin to issue new Temporary License Plates , in accordance with P . L . 2023 , c . 285 ( C . 2C : 21-4.9 et al .) as part of a statewide effort to reduce vehicle registration fraud . The new law defines increased penalties for both dealers and individuals who knowingly issue , possess , or display fraudulent temporary license plates ( aka Temp Tags ) including those issued by dealers using false information .
Law enforcement officials are advised of two key dates for the transition period to the new temp tags :
1 . August 11 , 2024 – Dealers may begin issuing new temp tags . After this date , you will see both current and new versions on the road that are both valid .
2 . November 1 , 2024 – After this date , only new temp tags should be visible on the road .
Changes included to the current Temp Tag format – Temp tags will no longer be issued on plain white paper . Going forward they will be issued on light grey security paper , including a highly visible and reflective holographic NJMVC logo in the lower right corner of the temporary plate . Additional security features included in the updated security paper are highlighted in the accompanying transition guide .
