Ask the Physician
My brother recently had a heart attack. His recovery is going OK, but I’m worried about him. He’s not the
kind of guy to sit around, and now he’s going overboard exercising – walking, weights in his living room,
you name it. I think he’s doing too much, too soon, but he wants to get right back up to speed. What
should I tell him? –Donald, North Wildwood
Donald, I think you have valid concerns.
I can understand your brother wanting to get right back into his lifestyle, but a heart attack is a serious condition.
I hope his cardiologist has scheduled him for cardiac rehab, where they will do a supervised exercise program tailored
to his needs.
As to other exercise, I recommend starting with something as simple as walking. It’s helpful if he does it at the same
time each day -- to help establish a daily habit -- as well as reducing the impact of any medicines he may be taking
or his meals. I also recommend staying safe and walking close to home, and with a friend or family members.
Your brother really shouldn’t do too much too soon, and should ONLY do what his doctor has cleared him for.
And remind him, if he’s feeling any shortness of breath, chest discomfort, or increased fatigue, your brother should
stop exercising and contact his doctor.
