Major Douglas Burig, Pennsylvania State Police
Executive Director, MAGLOCLEN
On September 12, 2014, Pennsylvania State Police (PSP)
Corporal Bryon Dickson and Trooper Alex Douglass were
ambushed and shot in front of the PSP Blooming Grove
Barracks killing Corporal Dickson and critically injuring
Trooper Douglas.
The ensuing investigation quickly
identified 31-year-old Eric Frein as the person responsible
for the sniper-style attack. Frein fled into the rugged terrain
of the Pocono Mountains as over 1,000 federal, state and
local law enforcement officials engaged in a massive
manhunt to bring him to justice. After 48 days, Frein was
taken into custody and ultimately sentenced to death for his
crimes. The investigation and manhunt garnered national
media attention throughout its duration.
During this presentation, members of the PSP will recount
details about the attack, the investigation and the tactics
utilized during largest manhunt in recent Pennsylvania
history. Emphasis will be placed on sharing the “lessons
learned” from conducting a sustained, multiagency
investigation and search involving a large number of
personnel under challenging circumstances. By sharing
these experiences, it our intent that the attendees can apply
them to any critical incident they might encounter.
