Ask the Physician
As a first responder I have a very stressful job. I am worried about my heart and want to do the “right
thing” but honestly, I don’t have time to hit the gym. And cooking a healthy dinner? Between calls it’s
usually fast food or my favorite diner. What can I do to help my heart? -- John M., Bayville
John, first thank you for your commitment to helping others and your dedication to your job!
I’m sorry to hear that you have so much work-related stress. I am glad to hear that you know what you SHOULD be
doing to help manage your heart health. That’s a good start, and hopefully the time will come soon when you can
really take care of yourself.
If you can’t do the “right thing” all the time, you can still help yourself by not doing the “wrong thing”. This includes
cutting back on overeating (say “no” to the second helping and gooey desserts); cut back on your alcohol use; and
don’t smoke. These habits can increase blood pressure and cholesterol levels which are major heart disease risk fac-
tors.
And anything you can do to manage your stress will help, including regular check-ups with your doctor, who will keep
an eye on your heart health.
