in the database. This sometimes results in an identification. In missing person cases, collecting DNA from
items belonging to the victim or even DNA from certain family members can be immensely helpful in
furthering the investigation.
Additionally, law enforcement has had great success utilizing DNA for identifying deceased persons during
mass disaster investigations. It was used most recently in the September 2019 boat fire in California and
was also used after the attacks of September 11.
Does the CODIS Compliance Unit offer training?
The CODIS Compliance Unit offers a variety of no-cost training to accommodate the needs of different
agencies. Regional training sessions are held at county police academies throughout the year. (For a list of
dates and facilities, contact the CODIS Compliance Unit at the number below.) In-house department training
can also be scheduled. And immediate personal training can be accomplished at the CODIS Compliance
Office in Trenton with minimal delay. In addition to the above training, the CODIS Compliance Unit will hold
this year’s annual CODIS Conference for Law Enforcement on Thursday, November 7, 2019, at the
New Jersey State Police Office of Forensic Sciences building in Hamilton. For registration information, contact
