The New Jersey Police Chief Magazine | June 2019 This Month in NJSACOP History…JUNE 1914 At the June monthly NJSACOP Meeting, President Monahan stated that “he thought it would be a good plan to dispense with the summer meetings due to the fact that so many Chiefs of Police would be on vacation and so decided that the next regular meeting be held on the first Thursday in September.” This was the start of a tradition that has carried through the past 105 years. 1921 A giant figure in New Jersey policing history, as well as that of the NJSACOP and the IACP, Bergen County Police Chief Peter Siccardi was inducted into membership in the Association during the June State Chiefs Meeting, as was Weehawken Chief August Klassen and Harrison Chief Andrew Walsh. Chief Peter Siccardi (Bergen Co. PD) and Chief August Klassen (Weehawken PD) 1930 Chief William Schoepflin of the Absecon Police Department was shot and killed in the line of duty. 1941 At the May 1941 State Chiefs Meeting, a letter was read that had been received from the “Chamber of Commerce at New Brunswick from C. Suydam Cutting of New York regarding the sending of confiscated weapons to him to be sent to the British Government.” Following discussion, it was decided to notify the Chamber of Commerce “to have a bill passed which would enable Police to give these weapons to the British War Relief.” 1980 Chief Polhamus reported at the May monthly NJSACOP Meeting that the Statewide Police Emergency Network (SPEN) became a reality on April 30 th , and that implementation of base stations will be included. The Chief thanked all of the Chiefs and NJSP Superintendent Pagano for their efforts in promoting the SPEN program. Deputy Superintendent Brennan of the State Police addressed the membership and extended the State Police’s support to help make the new system a success. 1984 Under New Business during the June 7, 1984 State Chiefs Meeting, Holmdel Police Chief Bruce Phillips “suggested that the State Association host a Police Memorial Service during Police Week.” This suggestion turned into the annual NJ Law Enforcement Memorial Service, the first statewide service of it’s kind in the United States, conducted annually on the Tuesday following National Police Week at the Great Auditorium in Ocean Grove, NJ. 2004 At the May, 2004 State Police Chiefs Briefing, Executive Director Sklar announced the “NJSACOP’s newest executive level training program…The Gettysburg Leadership Experience Staff Ride.” Chief R.
