2019 PO Box 160 02 Trenton, NJ 08666-0160 Motor Vehicle Advisory Philip D. Murphy Governor Sheila Y. Oliver Lt. Governor B. Sue Fulton Chair and Chief Administrator TO: All Law Enforcement Officials FROM: B. Sue Fulton, Chair and Chief Administrator DATE: March 21, 2019 SUBJECT: New: Availability of Temporary Duplicate Registration Printout Effective March 22, 2019, the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission (MVC) will amend the manner in which a customer can receive a duplicate vehicle registration. The current practice calls for the customer to visit an MVC agency in person. The MVC then provides the customer with a duplicate vehicle registration. The new process allows the customer to request a duplicate vehicle registration online. The MVC will provide the customer with a letter as proof of a duplicate vehicle registration for thirty (30) days or until vehicle registration expiration date (if sooner). The customer will be encouraged to retain this letter and be prepared to produce it as evidence of the duplicate vehicle registration. The MVC is allowing the letter to be presented to law enforcement by either printing it out or showing it on their mobile device. A Criminal Justice Information System inquiry of the MVC driver record will reflect the accurate status of the vehicle registration. All MVC records will indicate the accurate vehicle registration status. Please see the sample of the New Jersey Duplicate Interim Registration Document on the next page. 24
