The New Jersey Police Chief Magazine | May 2018 2018 NJSACOP Police Executive Institute The 17 th session of the Police Executive Institute took place April 16-20, 2018 at the National Conference Center and Holiday Inn in East Windsor. This year’s NJSACOP PEI agenda included a compelling presentation from Major Jessica Dawson, US Army, Department of Behavioral Sciences & Leadership, US Military Academy at West Point entitled “Organizational Justice and The Psychology of Trust.” Additionally, the NJ Office of Homeland Security & Preparedness presented a module called “Cyber Security – Not Just an IT Issue.” Former DEA Press Information Officer Doug Collier led a highly interactive “Media and Press Skills for the Police Executive” session, and retired Detective Chief Inspector Dave Annets (Hampshire Police and the College of Policing) facilitated two modules: “Creativity and Innovation in Leadership” and “Leading Performance in Policing.” One day of this year’s PEI had participants participate in a special “Staff Ride for Law Enforcement Leaders,” using the Battle of Monmouth Court House as the living classroom. The session was facilitated by William “Pat” Schuber of Fairleigh Dickinson University. This day focused on leadership case studies, in particular the leadership of General George Washington and General Lord Cornwallis in highly pressurized circumstances and extreme conditions. The events, personalities and challenges presented and overcome during these historic events serve as the basis for lessons for today’s law enforcement leaders. That day began with a tour and lecture at the NJ National Guard Militia Museum in Sea Girt. The week was anchored by a full day presentation on “Emotional Survival for Law Enforcement” by Dr. Kevin Gilmartin. The sold out 17 th session of the Police Executive Institute was a tremendous success. With 50 police executives present, the advanced level session was an excellent opportunity to hone effective leadership skills that can be taken back and immediately applied in the workplace.
