80 Years Ago – March 1938 The NJSACOP Monthly State Chiefs Meeting for March 1938 was held at the Court House in Newark, NJ. President Brady introduced a Mr. Newman, who addressed the membership on the topic of a new organization called the Police Scouts of America, which, Mr. Newman stated, had been formed for the same purpose as the Boy Scouts of America …
but the boys in the Police Scouts were recruited from the families who could not afford to pay the dues and buy the uniforms, etc., as required by the Boy Scouts of America. After finishing his address the speaker was asked who was promoting the project and how was the money to be raised. To the latter question the speaker was not in a position to speak as they had just organized, but when he mentioned that Charles Thomas, connected with the Police Journal was one of the promoters the members did not take a kindly attitude, and the discussions stopped.
