HEALTH TIP : Spring Into Exercise
With spring finally here , now might be the right time to address many of the unhealthy habits we ’ ve acquired over the past year including eating too much and becoming couch potatoes . Focusing on our health and well-being as we begin to re-enter our old lives can have profound impacts moving forward .
The secret to a longer life may not be much of a secret at all : Numerous studies have shown that moderate physical activity , particularly as we age , can play a role in reducing the risk of death . Some evidence shows that increasing physical activity can benefit overall life span as much as quitting smoking .
Start Slowly and Be Consistent
If you haven ’ t been a regular exerciser , start slowly and aim for 30 minutes of moderate activity six days a week . Just walking briskly every day could very well help extend your life . Starting with something simple as a daily walk provides a goal that is easily obtainable , and is less likely to be so overwhelming that you quit soon after starting .
The health benefits of walking every day cannot be overstated . You ’ ll find yourself trimming down your waist line , improving your metabolic and cardiac fitness , keeping your joints supple , and finding a great way to reduce daily stress .
Build Up Slowly
After you are able to establish a good routine by fitting in a walk every day , when you feel ready to move to a little more vigorous activity , there are lots of options you can incorporate into your routine like peddling a stationary bike , taking the stairs instead of an elevator , trying yoga or tai chi , and even walking while you ’ re talking on the phone . All these small exercise steps count big and will pay dividends towards improving your mental and physical health .
It ’ s better to start with achievable goals . Set yourself up for success with healthy habits that can have positive results on your overall health as you age .
