I have been under a lot of stress lately , my kids ’ schools keep going remote because of COVID infections , and I have to keep taking time off from work . Whenever I get the call from school my heart starts to race and I have panic attacks . Can this make me sick ? Sarah , Lawrenceville
Sarah , that ’ s a good question . First , I ’ m sorry about your situation , I keep hearing this all the time from my patients . Yes , stress can make you sick . If you are overall healthy , I would recommend that you find a way to manage and react to these life stressors to keep yourself from having problems . If you already have any other issues like high blood pressure or diabetes , it ’ s vital that you reduce your stress levels , and not forget to take your medications and keep up with your doctor appointments . Taking deep breaths , meditating , going for a walk , getting enough sleep , and eating heart healthily can help manage that stress . You may also consider talking to your boss if possible . Additionally , if your symptoms persist and you are concerned about your health , you should seek medical attention . This is a hard time for everyone , and you may find more support at work than you realize .
