Ask the Physician

The New Jersey Police Chief Magazine | May 2021
I have to get a defibrillator because of my heart rhythm problems . I am so nervous about having a device in my chest , and am scared that it won ’ t work right and I won ’ t know it . What can I do to ease my mind ? Jonathan , Eastampton
Jonathan , it is natural to be apprehensive about a device implant . First and foremost , let me reassure you that the procedure itself is extremely safe and recovery is quick . The devices manufactured today meet exacting quality standards , with many , many safeguards in place , so the chances of any mishap with your device is extremely low .
That being said , we are now starting to use Bluetooth technology with these devices . They connect to an app on your phone , and you can check that app at any time to see how your device is performing , what type of data it ’ s collecting , and how often it ’ s sending updates to your doctor . On the other side , your medical team is constantly reviewing the same data , so if they notice something off – not just with the device itself – but also with your heart , they are immediately notified , and if needed can take quick action to prevent an episode .
Once you get used to this , patients find comfort in having one ! It provides tremendous peace of mind , and is so simple to use .
Good luck with your procedure , and if you have any questions about our remote monitoring technology , do not hesitate to contact one of our electrophysiology specialists at www . DemandDeborah . org or 855-646-3484
