Opportunities to Lead
The New Jersey Police Chief Magazine | December 2020
As we bring 2020 to a close , we have many “ things ” to reflect on , ponder , learn from , disregard , move past , and of course cherish . It has been one of the strangest years in memory for all of us who are leading our agencies and leading our communities . Policing looks different every day , which mean we must be even better at anticipating and navigating the changing landscape : 200-plus Executive Orders because of COVID , a new remote court system , a new Use of Force policy , a new Vehicular Pursuit policy , countless legislative proposals on the table for policing , police licensing , legalization of marijuana or adult use cannabis , and the list goes on and on .
The best leaders I have experienced or studied were always the ones who were able to anticipate and navigate change , provide balance during a storm , and adapt quickly . Balance comes from building a strong foundation through a positive healthy culture , where your staff and line officers trust their leaders before the storm . Some do not have the luxury of a solid foundation and must attain balance on the fly - which can be difficult , but not impossible . In cases like this , the chaos can help push your organization towards a healthy culture . This is an opportunity to lead that should not be missed .
Adapting to what is new or difficult is also a great opportunity but requires a special type of leader . Quickly adapting and leading in a positive way will add to the strength of your culture and foundation quickly . If you find yourself resisting change you will inevitably erode your culture and the organization will suffer , therefore weakening the foundation and making your organization vulnerable . Avoid the pitfall of avoiding change and adapt quickly . Your organizations will be better for it .
A healthy culture does not happen overnight and requires effort . The year 2020 has offered many difficulties that should be viewed as opportunities to lead , create trust , provide balance , and improve the culture in your agency . It is hard to see at times , but these opportunities are there , so capitalize on them , lead you people and your communities .
Happy holidays and hope to see you in person soon !
