Division of Highway Traffic Safety Celebrates Milestone Anniversary of GDL and “ Kyleigh ’ s Law ”
Chief Christopher Wagner ( Ret .) NJSACOP Director of Public Affairs , Law Enforcement Liaison to NJ Division of Highway Traffic Safety
The NJ Division of Highway Traffic Safety is proud to celebrate two milestones in their Nationally Acclaimed Teen Driving Laws .
This year marks the 10-year anniversary of Kyleigh ’ s Law , which requires teens to affix stickers to their vehicles to identify them as novice drivers , and the 20-year anniversary of New Jersey ’ s Graduated Driver License (“ GDL ”) program , a three-tiered licensing process considered one of the most progressive and stringent teen driver measures in the United States .
To mark this important milestone , the Division has produced two videos for distribution ( one targeted towards teens and another for parents ) as well as several static graphics for use on Social Media and Webpages . We are encouraging all our NJSACOP Members to select the links below for access to the videos and images and then place them on your agency ’ s pages and sites for distribution to your residents .
It ’ s important to know that , since the implementation of the Graduated Driver ’ s License Law and its enhancement , Kyleigh ’ s Law , 10 years later , fatalities with a teen driver were reduced 47 % ( from 101 to 53 ) and crashes with passengers under 20 killed with teen drivers were reduced 60 % ( from 19 to 8 ) between 2008 and 2018 .
