Maccabi in 1977

In 1977, in the semi-finals, Maccabi met the Moscow-Red Army team, which until that time raised 4 times the European Cup and was considered as a superpower in terms of European basketball.

Ten years earlier, the Russians broke off contacts with Israel and supported the militarily Arab enemies. For political reasons, CSKA refused to play in Tel Aviv. The Soviets themselves refused to approve visas permitting Maccabi to play in Moscow. Finally, it was decided that home games of Maccabi will be held in the neutral town of Boirton, Belgium.

The match took place emotionally charged and raised the attention of so many Israelis, even those who have no interest in basketball, because they saw it as very symbolic. On the eve of the game, on February 17, 1977, Ma'ariv newspaper called it: "The battle between David and Goliath." Many Israel citizen were watching broadcast on Channel One, the only channel in those days.

Maccabi won in the game 91-79. Israelis felt that this was a victory over the entire Soviet Union, not just over CSKA Moscow, and for years was considered a seminal event in history and Israeli identity.

On that night, Tal Brody, the captain of the team made his famous statement: “We are on the map and we stay on the map – not only in sport, in everything”.
