Pi Day

By Ilana Taieb Hagerty

We all know the horrendously long number we first met in 6th grade geometry- Pi, aka: 3.14159265358979323846264338327950288419716939937510582....

It goes on.

But did you know it has its own day?! The 14th of March is celebrated by eating pie, throwing pies and discussing the significance of the number π, due to a pun based on the words "pi" and "pie" being homophones in English, as well as pies tending to be round, and thus related to π.

But last year Pi Day rose to a whole new level- 14th of March 2015, at 9:26:53.5, it was the perfect Pi!

So, as a celebration of Pi, here are some random facts about the number!

- π is the number of times a circle’s diameter will fit around its circumference (in case you ever wondered what Pi means).

- Pi can be calculated with the following equation:

N x sin(180/N)

The higher N's value is, the closer you will get to Pi's value. Explanation here.
