April Fool's Day
Shir Nir Berlowitz - 9th grade
April fool's day, celebrated every year on 1st of April, is a day dedicated to pranks, jokes and hoaxes. Even though it has no official recognition, a lot of newspapers, magazines, and other published media report fake stories, and all kinds of jokes, which are usually explained the next day.
Its origins are uncertain. there are a lot of different theories about it, here some of the must popular ones:
- One theory is that it began in 1582, when France adopted the Gregorian calendar. Before this time, New Year’s Day fell on March 25 (and was a long holiday ending on 1 April) rather than January 1. Those who continued to celebrate the old New Year were called “fools”.
- Ancient Romans celebreted a festival known as Hilaria. That was dedicated to the god Attis. Hilaria resembles the word hilarity in English, which means: happy, joyful, cheerful.
- In India, Holi, a colorful Hindi festival is celebrated each spring by people playing jokes and throwing colorful dyes on each other.
