The WSDPD (World Science Day for Peace and Development) is held every 10th of November to raise awareness of the benefits of science all around the world.

The first WSDPD celebrations were held on 10.11.2002 and the concept was established the year before that by the UNESCO. The WSDPD celebrations have many different special activities, including open days with different courses about the importance of science world-wide, WSDPD poster distribution, science museum visits and much more.

Since it was introduced, World Science Day has also started big projects, programmes and funding for science around the world. Several ministries have announced that they will invest more into science for instance, or the creation of a university or research institute. The WSDPD has also helped cooperation between scientists living in regions that are in conflict, for example the creation of the Israeli-Palestinian Science Organization (IPSO) with of course a lot of support from UNESCO.

Like most special events, every year there is a different theme to this special day, for example "Towards Green Societies" (2011), Astronomy (2009) and Science for the Rapprochement of Peoples and Cultures (2010) along with many more. This year's event promoted "Quality Science Education: ensuring a sustainable future for all".

Do not be mistaken! This is a world-wide project with the full meaning of the term - people from all around the world are part of this. Part of the idea is to make sure all the countries participate so peace can be made between countries at least in the scientific world.
