Ten Numbers And A Cup Of Tea

- “Give me my phone back!”

- “Let me see the conversation!”

- “No way!”

I elbowed him in the ribs and the phone dropped out of his hand, and as I lunged towards the floor to prevent it from falling, the maid walked in, stopped at the door and muttered, “These boys seem to grow older without growing up,” and walked away, taking with her the old broom.

“Thank you for not paying attention for a moment and letting me take back my phone,” he said mischievously, and sure enough, it was in his hands.

“Scumbag,” I muttered and he laughed.

“Can you at least tell me if you invited her to the movies? To an ice cream? Something? Anything?” I asked.

He shook his head.

“You. Are. The. Worst. I mean you met her two weeks ago and you haven’t invited her anywhere?!” I said and he just smiled.

“By the way, you just got a text from her,” I said as I stared at the phone’s screen.

He looked down at the phone to read, and his face turned white as linen.

“Oh. My. Gorillas. She’s… she’s- Oh no,” his voice trailed off.

“She’s what? She’s beautiful? Mean? Sweet? What?’’, “She what? Tell me! I’m your annoying brother- I deserve to know….” I said.

“She was kidnapped and the guy wants all the shares on dad’s box,” he said with tears in his eyes. What he meant by box was dad’s tea company- and those ‘box’ shares were given only to family members. “But he knows that those shares only go to family…” I said hesitantly.

He shook his head and handed me the phone and I read the text message.
