The New Working Week 2021 | Page 4

Pocklington School : A New Working Week .

We believe that this change will support the School ’ s strategic goal of improving academic outcomes and increasing our pupils ’ independence . Our new working week will see pupils spending more time in academic lessons and making more efficient and effective use of their time in school . It offers the right platform to drive forward improved academic standards along with a curriculum in support of this objective .
This evolution seeks to improve our overall educational product and experience for generations of Pocklington students to come . In addition to the substantial academic benefits , we aim to improve our co-curricular opportunities , sporting options , boarding provision and pastoral care via a 5-day academic week . Furthermore , it is anticipated that this enhancement of our all-round educational package enables us to best respond to pupil well-being and meet the needs of modern family life .
A new working week
All academic lessons in Pocklington School will operate from Monday-Friday via a two-week timetable . This means that pupils will have a different timetable in Week ‘ A ’ and Week ‘ B ’. This allows for increased flexibility in timetabling and results in us being able to maintain our choice-based curriculum and introduce new subjects at different stages of the School . Break , lunch , games lessons , lunchtime clubs and practices will remain at the same time in each week . The two-week timetable will only apply to Pocklington School , and not to the Prep School . Pupils in the Prep School will follow a broadly similar structure to the one displayed here though lunch and break times may be slightly different .
Overall , Pocklington School pupils will gain roughly two weeks of extra academic teaching per year . Prep School pupils will gain an additional six days of teaching . Given the increasingly competitive world our pupils are facing when they leave school , we believe it is right to give them the very best platform to prepare them for whatever pathway their future holds . Longer lessons facilitate independent thinking , the time to reflect and consider problems in more depth , the opportunity to discuss and debate complex ideas and the chance to undertake practical work on a more frequent basis .

We also believe this change will better facilitate Pocklington pupils further developing skills they will require in an increasingly competitive university and employment landscape . Longer lessons allow for more creative approaches to teaching and learning and this in turn further empowers our teachers to deeply instil the School ’ s Virtues in our pupils . Our Sixth Form students will have fewer study periods and be busier during the new working week . The overwhelming majority of subjects gain teaching time as a result of this curriculum structure review . We have also broadened our curriculum , investing in new timetabled subjects at Middle School and A level .
