WORTH A BLOODY OSCAR
The Blood Wedding
Yağmur Öztürk
“Blood Wedding" by Federico Garcia Lorca, was the first play performed in December of the
2013-14 academic year by the RC Theatre. The drama, which takes place in a Spanish village, tells a
complicated tale about a family who wants to take revenge for the murder of their father and the eldest
son. The son of the murderous family tragically falls in love with a young woman who should marry a
boy from the mourning family. The bride runs away with her bridegroom's enemy. In this play love didn't
bring freedom and happiness, to the contrary it brought death and destruction. Blood Wedding's
interesting topic came alive by the acting of the RC students.
“It had an interesting and depressing topic. We have some really strong actors, many of the actors
didn't perform on stage before in RC,” said English teacher and the costume designer of this play, Allison
Standley about 'Blood Wedding.'
The stage was decorated proper to the life in Spanish village. The students behind tried to give a
daily appearance to the play. Their moves for example; buying something, fixing their shoes, walk
around in the back helped us to be attuned to the play. English Teacher Jake Becker mentioned about the
acting of students and the stage with these words: “I was impressed by how the mother came across as
very authoritative and proud and troubled. Most of all I enjoyed the village scenes in the background
buying bread, fixing their shoes. This brought a life to the play.”
Besides the strong acting skills
of students and the best designed stage,
the music helped to develop the dark
mood of what was happening on the
stage. Most of the students said they
loved and enjoyed the play, but some of
them had difficulty about hearing the
dialogue. According to them, this didn't
change the quality of the performance.
İrem Uğurad from LP9 said “Sometimes
I couldn't hear the dialogues but I
enjoyed the every second of the play.”
