DRESS CODE FOR
DUMMIES
Appearance matters!
If you looked at Robert College’s website and handbook you would know that the Dress Code
seems intimidating. You have to be clean, neat, and modest at all times. Boys must wear properly tied
neckties and girls cannot wear jewelry except for a watch. That is intimidating, no? Don’t worry it is not
as scary as it seems. In fact a lot of teachers, including Dean of Students, Mrs. Halıcıoğlu, thinks that the
dress code is relaxed. She also adds, “Students have no specific uniform so they have the freedom to
show their own styles.”
Since there is no uniform unlike many secondary schools require, getting used to even a dress
code can be challenging for some students. If you are one of those students believe me after a while
choosing an outfit for school becomes a piece of cake. If you are girl, all you have to do is wearing a
normal length skirt and a RC polo or a plain button shirt. If you are a boy, just shave and wear a plain
shirt and trousers. It is not hard, is it?
Even though it won’t be hard there is a chance that you don’t like the way dress code works. For
example, in a survey which was prepared for LP9 students, it was understood that half of them still
prefer their previous school’s dress code which was a specific uniform or free dress all the time. Mrs.
Kelly and Mr. Carter both agree that our dress code is unclear and hard to implement. Probably this is the
reason for students not to like it.
When there is nothing specific to wear the suitableness of the outfit changes according to
everyone’s point of view and that explains why most of the detentions are because of not obeying the
dress code. In Turkey we have a proverb, which says too much of everything is harmful. Having too
much initiative of what to wear makes RC students stay after school. So be careful and dress according
to teachers’ point of view, not yours!
A simple example.
