A Human Treatment Modality Is Breathing New Life Into Dogs.
In human medicine, the healing properties of hyperbaric oxygen have been recognized for at least 20 years. Still, currently there are only a handful of veterinary hospitals in the U.S. that offer HBOT treatment for small animals despite the sometimes nearly miraculous results.
When 15-year-old Cairn Terrier Bonnie woke up not feeling herself, her worried owners took her immediately to their veterinarian. But Bonnie got worse and soon both of her hind legs were paralyzed. Her diagnosis was not good. Bonnie’s veterinary neurologist said she had intervertebral disk disease. A “slipped disk” in her back was placing pressure on Bonnie’s spinal cord causing it to swell and the paralysis was a result of that swelling. She needed surgery, the neurologist said, but Bonnie also suffered from heart disease so she was not a good candidate for surgery. Bonnie’s devastated owners feared that euthanasia was the only option for their beloved pet. Desperate, Bonnie’s owners turned to veterinarian Diane Levitan for help. It was fortunate that they did. Levitan assured Bonnie’s owners that there was another option—a non-surgical option: hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT). “Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is ideal for reducing swelling,” Dr. Levitan said.
