Take a writer who is a contributing editor at Outside magazine, Men’s Journal, and National Geographic Adventure, and it’s a good bet your first novel is going to be pretty compelling...gritty. Peter Heller’s The Dog Stars, is a fictional, albeit an imaginative account, of life in a post-apocalyptic world. The book’s hero, Hig, is a pilot who flies a 1956 Cessna with a dog as his co-pilot. They fly around what was once Colorado in search of other life. With his wife and friends all dead, Hig and his dog live in a hangar at a small abandoned airport. On one of his flights, a random transmission comes through his radio.
